Our plan is to have a major international Gallagher Gathering in Donegal every two years with a smaller one (perhaps a day or two day event) in the alternate years.
As one of the Clan’s aims is to facilitate gatherings at local and national levels as well as international events, we would appreciate if groups could get together in various regions in the world. This organisation will assist as best it can include promoting and facilitating the event on this website.
In 2006, concurrently with the 2007 Global Gathering being begun to be organised, some Gallaghers were planning to hold a Gallagher get-together in the USA. They gracefully decided to hold off from organising anything in 2007 so as not to cause a clash. However 2008 was mooted as an alternative for an American gathering. If there is anyone interested in helping out please send your details and we will forward them on. Is there any reason the other countries with large Gallagher populations can not follow the example of our American cousins?
There are large populations of Gallaghers in various counties in Ireland. Each county should organise an event to celebrate their own unique heritage.
We found that it is useful to first have low-key evening events to judge the interest and to see what is most suitable to the various areas. Following from our own experience we can help any interested group to formulate a plan for such an occasion.
Our previous events have been a great incitement to study our heritage and a great source of information especially through family folklore comes to the fore. The more events take place the greater the information we will gather regarding our celebrated communal heritage.
Mr. Enda Kenny, the Fine Gael leader formally launched the Mayo branch of the Gallagher Clan organisation in The Travellers Friend and Theatre on Monday July 30th 2007 at 2.30pm. All Gallaghers in the region and those of Gallagher extraction were invited to attend and become involved. An ambitious and immediate aim of the clan is to gain entry to the Guinness Book of Records by having the largest number of people with same last name assemble together. This event is scheduled for Letterkenny on September 9th next during the Gallagher Global Gathering which runs concurrently with the national Flight of the Earls ceremony.
