2007 Reunion Itinerary

Saturday 8th September

7:00Reception at the Radisson SAS Hotel, Letterkenny

8:00Official International Launch of the Gallagher Clan Gathering, followed by a night of music & craic.

Sunday 9th September

1:30 - 6:00An afternoon of fun, music and pageantry, including a Guinness World Record™ attempt of “Largest same name gathering – Last name”. This will take place in a large sports complex in Letterkenny. Among the artists involved will be the Garda Band.

8:00A celebratory night of entertainment at the Radisson Hotel, Letterkenny. As part of the night’s entertainment there will be a 20 minute excerpt from the musical CAISÀIN OIR. The musical is adapted from Seamus O’Grianna’s novel and traces the lives of childhood sweethearts Seimi Gallagher and Babai Mhairtin Friel.

Monday 10th September

10.00Trip to Ballyshannon via Ballybofey, to explore the pre-historic beginnings of the Gallagher story. and visit the birthplace of Rory Gallagher.

7:00Dinner and entertainment in the Abbey Hotel, Donegal Town where we will meet with Gallaghers from all over South Donegal and further afield.

Tuesday 11th September

10:00Local trip around the area west of Letterkenny taking in Newmills to explore the water driven New Mills Corn & Flax Mills once owned by a Gallagher family. Followed by a visit to Gartan with its Columban heritage and history. Visit the site of the famous Glenveagh evictions in the 19th Century. Continuing, we will explore the beauty and history of Glenveagh National Park. After lunch, we will carry on to Doon Rock and Well where for centuries the Gallagher’s would have officiated at the inauguration of the O’Donnell chieftains. We’ll travel home via Kilmacrennan with its monastic settlement.

8:00Talks on exploring family history and entertainment in the Ramada Encore Hotel in Letterkenny

Wednesday 12th September

Lá Gaelach. A day to experience Gaelic (Irish) language and traditions.

10:00The day starts of with a trip to Gortahork via Creeslough, Dunfanaghy and Falcarragh.

1:00Lunch in the Ostan Loch Altan Hotel in Gortahork.

2:30After lunch we will visit the Ionad Cois Locha Visitor Centre, Dunlewey. Here we will be introduced to the country skills that many of our forbearers would have practised.

7:00Dinner in the Centre followed by a night displaying the local Gaelic culture.

Thursday 13th September

There are two options available. Both which start at 9.30:

9:30Trip to Derry (home to many Gallaghers and point of departure for many Gallagher emigrants) via the pre-historic fort of the Grianian of Aileach. There will be a visit to the famous Gallagher field where Amelia Earhardt landed after her historic first flight by a woman across the Atlantic. Lunch at that site, which is now a golf club. Visit Derry City with a guided walk along its famous walls. Returning via St. Johnston to Raphoe with its many Gallagher connections.

9:30A visit to the Ulster American Folk Park which tells the story of emigration from Ulster to America in the 18th & 19th centuries. There we can experience the life as it was lived in the Old World and what lay ahead for those who dared take the journey to the New. On the way we will visit the Lifford Old Courthouse Centre where we can follow in the footsteps of prisoners of the past when the prison warden takes you down to the dungeons where you will be charged, sentenced, fingerprinted and put in the stocks. After Lifford Courthouse the next stop for some Gallagher prisoners would have been the then new colony of Australia. (Welcome home, you Aussies.)

Friday 14th September

9:30The day starts of with a visit to Ramelton, the birthplace of Dave Gallagher first captain of the New Zealand All Black’s rugby team and Patsy “The Mighty Atom” Gallagher, Irish and Celtic FC football player.

12:00Attendance at the re-enactment of the Flight of the Earls, which will take place at Portnamurray, Rathmullen, the point of departure for the Earls and their Gallagher companions.

3:00Tour of the Atlantic Drive, where we can view the mighty Atlantic Ocean stretching all the way to America and on which many of our Gallagher ancestors sailed on their way to a new life. .

7:30Gala Ball, to end the weeks proceedings, held in the Radisson SAS Hotel, Letterkenny.

Prices:

The cost for the international launch will be €10. This will cover entrance fee, finger food and the night’s entertainment.

The cost for each day trip will be €30, (with the exception of Monday and Friday, which will cost €20). These prices cover transport and entrance fee.

These prices do not include lunch but a light lunch will be available on each of the days.

Dinner and entertainment in the Abbey hotel, on Monday will cost €30. Dinner and entertainment in the Ionad Cois Locha Visitor Centre on Wednesday will cost €30

Gala dinner in the Radisson SAS Hotel on Friday will cost €50

If booking online before 1st September, a 10% discount will apply.

Cancellation Policy:

If a cancellation is necessary, the following applies:

Before August 6th, full refund less 10% to cover handling charges

Before September 1st, 75% refund

After September 5th, 50% refund
